Alan Gernerd

Alan Gernerd, 83, of Oley, passed away Monday, January 24, 2011 in his residence.

Born and raised in Stony Creek Mills, he was the husband of Wanda (Gresh) Gernerd of Oley and the son of the late H. Wayne and Mary (DeTurk) Gernerd.

Upon graduating from Mt. Penn High School, he served in the Navy during WW II in the northern Pacific.

He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics and science from Kutztown State College and his master's degree from Lehigh University.

His career of 37 years as a chemistry teacher at Boyertown High School was complemented by receiving six National Science Foundation grants to pursue his post-graduate studies.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, gardening, tying flies for his fly fishing trips to Montana, clamming and crabbing at Chincoteague, caring for his Christmas tree farm, and traveling throughout the United States.

He was a member of Friedens Lutheran Church, Oley and Boyertown Lodge No. 741,

In addition to his wife of 58 years, he is survived by four children and their spouses: Deborah (Bill) Buckfelder of Palmyra, Kurt (Pam) Gernerd of Purcellville, VA, Eric (Peggy) Gernerd of Oley, and Alisa (Mark) Brumbach of Oley; and he was the loving grandfather of eleven grandchildren: Adam and Scott Buckfelder; Erin, Yvonne, Kurt II, Karen, and Sarah Gernerd; Ethan and Graham Gernerd; and Lauren and Courtney Brumbach.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 28, 2011 at 11:00 am at Friedens Lutheran Church, 1076 Memorial Highway, Oley, PA 19547 with Rev. David R. Rowe officiating. Burial will follow in Friedens Cemetery, Oley. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service, from 10 to 11 am.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friedens Lutheran Church Memorial Fund at the above address.

Blankenbiller Funeral Home, 423 Main Street, Oley is in charge of arrangements.
