Nevin A. "Whitey" Smith, Jr., 70, of Upper Bern Township died July 14 in the Reading Hospital. He was the husband of Glenna F. (Hix) Smith and the son of the late Nevin A. Smith, Sr. and Alice V. (Hargreaves) Smith. Nevin was a 1965 graduate of Hamburg Area High School, a veteran of the Army National Guard from 1967-1972, and a member of Vaux Lodge #406 F & AM. He worked for the railroad for 35 years, beginning with the Reading Railroad, which was acquired by Conrail, and later by Norfolk Southern, where he retired as a car foreman. Nevin enjoyed repairing cars and lawn mowers and driving his motorcycle. He could always be counted on to help his family and friends with almost anything. In addition to his wife, Nevin is survived by two daughters, Angie A. Smith, Shartlesville and Jamie L. Smith, Laureldale, two sisters, Donna L., wife of Leroy Kaley, Perry Township and Debra L. Smith, Hamburg, his adopted sister, Eva McAndrews, Florida, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Diane F. Smith in October 2010. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 23 rd at 11:00 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, 529 St. Michael's Church Road, Hamburg, PA. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Michael's Church at the above address. The Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home, Inc. Hamburg is in charge of arrangements.
