A. David Mahony, 90, passed away peacefully at The Highlands, a retirement community in Wyomissing, PA on May 12, 2018. He was the husband of the late Phyllis Ann Mahony, who passed in July of 2016.
Born in Fitchburg, MA, in 1928 to Arthur and Julia (Walsh) Mahony, David graduated from Bordentown Military Institute, an independent military school in Bordentown, NJ, in 1947. He went on to attend Georgetown University, where he graduated a member of the class of 1951.
A proud veteran, he served in the U.S. Army after school, stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After returning from the war, David married Phyllis Ann Sollas in 1954. Together, they raised five children in Ridgewood and Glen Rock, NJ.
David began his business career with Macy's Department Store in their Management Training Program before moving to Prudential Insurance Co., the start of more than 50 years in the life insurance business. He then moved on to work at Standard Security Insurance Co., rising to Senior Vice President of Underwriting before beginning his own Life and Health Brokerage Agency in 1973, which David continued to run until his retirement.
David enjoyed summers in Bay Head, NJ and was an avid golfer and New York Giants fan. He was a longtime member of Ridgewood Country Club and Arcola Country Club, both in Paramus, NJ, and the Union League Club in New York City. He was also a faithful parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, West Reading.
Surviving are his five children: sons Arthur and his wife Namiko of Chesapeake, VA; Mark and his wife Eileen of Maplewood, NJ; and Tom and his wife Michele of Wyomissing, PA; daughters Juliann of Santa Fe, NM; and Meaghan Mathews and her husband John of Riverside, IL. There are also 11 grandchildren, Kelly, Shauna, David, Caitlin, Matt, Kerry, Tom Jr., Catherine, Liam, Ciaran, and Finbar, and three great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are his brother-in-law, Dr. Thomas V. Sollas Jr. of Point Pleasant, NJ, and sister-in-law Elizabeth Sibilia and her longtime partner Bobby Castellucia, of Lakewood, NJ. David was predeceased by his sister-in-law Ann H. Sollas.
At David's request, he has been cremated and his Memorial Service will be private for family members. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation in memory of David to your favorite charity.
